Torres Quevedo Programme: Data Visualisation in Virtual Reality Environments

Duration:

2024-2027

Budget:

97.188€

The project proposes to develop a production model for communicating science in data visualisation format in extended reality (XR) environments. By exploring some of the technologies available on the market (Flow Immersive, BabiaXR or Aframe), the creation of XR products aimed at raising environmental awareness among citizens and facilitating political decision-making on odour pollution is proposed. The data that will feed the visualisations will come from OdourCollect, an app where citizens can register and map odours in their environment.

In addition, it is proposed to create a model to measure the effectiveness of these communicative products in XR that combines neuromarketing techniques with qualitative and quantitative analysis, thus continuing the line of research initiated by the recipient of the Torres Quevedo grant, Juan Romero-Luis, in his doctoral thesis.

Project challenge

This project faces the dual challenge of effectively communicating complex odour pollution data through immersive XR experiences and measuring the effectiveness of these experiences from a communication point of view. The volume and heterogeneity of the data, together with the novelty of XR technology in this context, require an innovative approach to visualising and interpreting the data, as well as assessing its impact on the audience.

Solutions

It is proposed to develop two innovative data visualisation products in XR (extended reality) environments: the first focused on increasing environmental awareness and stimulating active citizen participation, and the second specifically designed to optimise data integration in political decision-making. An effectiveness evaluation model will be implemented using neuromarketing techniques with iMotions technology, complemented by qualitative analysis. The production methodology will be documented in detail to ensure replicability and scalability.

Results

It is envisaged to generate a scalable methodological framework for the production of communicative data visualisation products in XR environments, two minimum viable functional products, a training service for science communicators, and a replicable effectiveness evaluation model. The project is also expected to have an impact on the scientific community through the publication of scientific articles presenting the findings and advances of data visualisation in virtual reality environments.

Project funded by the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades and the la Agencia Estatal de Investigación through the State Programme to Develop, Attract and Retain Talent, within the framework of the State Plan for Scientific, Technical and Innovation Research 2021-2023, through the Torres Quevedo grants of the State Research Agency (PTQ2023-013137).
